Our next stop along the way was Twizel, the largest town in the Mackenzie region with a population of 1200 residents and a hard to match backdrop of the Southern Alps. From our cute little mountain chalet the beautiful Pukaki lake was just minutes away. Beautiful sunsets make the mountains begging for “I See Fire” as a soundtrack.
We did one of the most popular walks in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, the Hooker Valley Track, leading up the Hooker Valley towards Aoraki/Mount Cook. The scenery is spectacular, with the tallest peak in New Zealand, Aoraki/Mount Cook, soaring above at a height of 3,724 metres. Crossing the Hooker River on multiple swing bridges the track ends at the glacier lake where there are amazing views of the Hooker Glacier and the Southern Alps.
