One of the most spectacular things we’ve done in New Zealand was riding a helicopter up to the face of the Fox Glacier and doing a three hour hike over the river of ice. Roaring waterfalls on the side and dramatic rocks being slowly transported over the slowest moving highway in the world to the terminal face of the glacier make you appreciated the size and beauty of these demising giants.
With some crampons strapped to our boots we were led by our guide Philly amongst amazing formations and ice caves. The sun was out and it was so warm on the glacier that we even took our jackets off. How often can you walk around amidst ice in a t-shirt. Highly recommended experience!
