One of the youngest towns in Bulgaria is the hometown of my girlfriend, Dimitrovgrad. Large spacious streets and many green parks are very characteristic to the town and make it one of the greenest cities in Bulgaria. In terms of size the town is not as big as it used to be, peaking in the late 80s at population of 50000 it is now home to around 35000 people. During my visit this year there was the annual carnival in the Maritsa Park.
Dimitrovgrad is part of the Haskovo Province, it’s capital being Haskovo. A relatively recent and particularly big Mother of God monument was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the highest monument to the Mother of God in the world, standing 32 meters tall. One can not help but think of Haskovo as the Rio of Bulgaria. The nearby tower provides a great vantage point over the city.
